The organization reports that Florida had the second-highest number of book-banning incidents in the nation during that period, trailing only Texas. The nation has seen a surge in book bans over the past two years as parents, conservative activists, and elected officials have flooded school districts with requests to wipe scores of titles from classrooms and libraries - with Florida still leading the pack in such incidents.Īfter more than 200 books were banned in various school districts across Florida between the summer of 2021 and 2022, districts continued the crackdown, banning 357 books between July and December 2022, according to the nonprofit organization PEN America. Still, there's one item school districts in Florida appear to have consistently banned more than almost any other U.S. It's part of a nationwide push by conservative politicians to draw their battle lines in the culture wars and signal to their constituency that they're decidedly anti-woke. Ron DeSantis' administration and the state's Republican-dominated legislature have instituted a dizzying number of regulations restricting what Floridians can say, read, and scroll through mindlessly. Florida's been banning a lot of things these days.įrom an AP African American studies course to classroom gender-identity discussions to TikTok on university phones, Gov.

It was, of course, a simple yes-or-no question. What the querying hand had left tacit another felt bound to spell out, making definitive what had merely been intimated: Scribbled in black marker was a resounding-an unequivocal-“Yes!”īut let us return to the reflection that “IS THIS DYSTOPIA?” seemed designed to provoke. Yet at least one passerby whom it similarly arrested was compelled to respond. It acted as a dramatic provocation by implying an answer so evident it hardly needs stating and is not expected. The question on the streetlight was patently rhetorical. Was the dystopia our society, now and here? Or was this the contemporary world as a whole? And did it matter which? Is there a real difference between these alternatives? It might be some part of the phrasing that for a moment holds all our attention. As though its message were addressed exclusively to us. “IS THIS DYSTOPIA?” Sometimes a simple stencil of bold red letters sprayed across a lamppost in a shabby part of town under lockdown stops us in our tracks. Every kid has seen at least one monster movie and knows how things can go bad. But the key is to keep the character as real as possible, capture REAL reactions to an unusual circumstance. It’s not always easy to keep the balance between drama, humor, and horror. And the main character, Samara, uses sarcasm as a defense mechanism. I’m a strong believer in humor as a buffer for stressful situations. How were you able to maintain all of these elements in one story? There are quite a bit of laugh-out-loud moments, as well as parts that are action-packed and scary. But will it help solve those problems, or simply watch as perfection goes into decline? Realizing she cannot do this alone-or even with the help of Scythe Curie and Faraday, she does the unthinkable, and risks being “deadish” so she can communicate with the Thunderhead-the only being on earth wise enough to solve the dire problems of a perfect world. In the year since Winter Conclave, he has gone off-grid, and has been striking out against corrupt scythes-not only in MidMerica, but across the entire continent. Rowan has gone rogue, and has taken it upon himself to put the Scythedom through a trial by fire. Thunderhead has got to be one of the best science fiction/dystopian novels that I have ever read. He just has this way of writing that has me completely engrossed. You know, I think it’s gotten to that point now where Neal Shusterman is one of my favourite authors. I will immediately move on to "Some Kind of Perfect" and then I will get back to the Like Us series, which I have already read but am currently listening to. But they were told so realistically that I was sobbing. I did (accurately) predict some of the events in this book which I won't reveal in this review. The close-knit family they have created is really something special. But there were also very serious, real problems for this couple to work through. And so I just gobbled up the romance portion of the book. Now there is no doubt - of all the originals, he's IT. It was obvious from the get-go that he needed the Daisy Calloway sparkle in his life, and that's what we have here in this book.Īs I read this series, I had concluded that Ryke is my favorite character. Through imagining what it is like to be a bee, the novel ends up reflecting on what a marvel it is to simply be – cutting to the heart of existence as it pits the perils of extinction against the fierce instinct to survive. Nevertheless, the lyrical prose holds the attention, for this is a novel that delights in language, savouring words with the same relish with which Flora rolls honey on her tongue. Paull is also a playwright and there are moments of real dramatic tension, although the plot doesn’t always maintain a steady pace and at times breaks the bounds of believability. It isn’t only sweetness but bitterness that seeps through the bees’ lives as environmental catastrophe threatens their very survival. Her debut novel, The Bees, was nominated for the 2015 Baileys Womens Prize for Fiction. The bees can smell emotions, making this novel a richly evocative feast for the senses. As well as conjuring the complex hum and throb of the hive, Laline Paull crafts a sticky matrix of emotion, for these bees feel, and Flora’s feelings are palpable. With this said, I was very excited when I heard of her upcoming book, Pride, Prejudice and Other Flavors by Sonali Dev that is set to release on 7th May 2019 and luckily got an ARC to read before the release. Sonali Dev’s books are vivid in detail, well crafted and with characters that make an impression. Ever since I read Sonali Dev’s second book, The Bollywood Bride, I have been a huge fan of her writing. □The characters were a massive strength of Little White Lies, and that’s still the case in its sequel and there’s character development, too.
